Intel’s new SSD 310 is eight time small than your notebook’s HDD

Intel has announced a new SSD. Nothing fast that’ll kill SandForce, but something that’s extremely small which Intel hopes to give a fight to Toshiba. Intel’s just announced a new SSD 310 line that offers spectacularly minimal 51mm by 30mm by 5mm dimensions, while retaining X25-class performance (up to 200MBps read and 80MBps write speeds).

To give you an idea of what those measurements mean, the industry-standard 2.5-inch form factor, an already diminutive footprint, is eight times larger than these new-fangled storage chips. 40GB and 80GB variants of the SSD 310 are shipping out to OEMs already and Lenovo has confirmed it plans to roll these into its next refresh of the venerable ThinkPad laptop line.

Prices are set at $99 and $179 (depending on size) when bought in batches of 1,000, though direct sales to end users are predictably off the table for now, as expected. The next SSD might be more expensive, and you’ve been warned.

MSI Zacate based netbook secretly unveiled in Taiwan

Here’s an MSI netbook based on Zacate, AMD’s new processor for killing Atom. Surprised, but it’s unveiled in a small Taipei-based event, which will be officially known to the world in CES. the Wind U270 netbook is an 11.6-incher with a 1.6GHz Zacate processor, 4GB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive and no optical drive to speak of. Other specs include a VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports, a single USB 3.0 socket, a Kensington lock port, 4-in-1 card reader, Ethernet jack and an overly glossy 1366 x 768 resolution panel. Courtesy of Netbook News’ hands-on, we’ve spotted a traditional chiclet keyboard, a split mouse button (huzzah!) and a trackpad that may very well not exist if it were any smaller. MSI wasn’t about to spill any details on a ship date or price so we’ll still need to wait for CES.

Cheap method to keep on cycling, in the snow

It’s snowing, and your car can’t move, but what about your bicycle? It should be the same, right? Well not really. If you don’t have stud tires, then a bunch of zip ties should do the trick. One of the cyclists at Dutch Bike Co. was caught without studded tires when it started snowing in Seattle. However, with some MacGyver trick, the problem is solved.

“I can accelerate, brake, and corner with aplomb, even on the vile snowpack/sheet ice mix the plows leave in the bike lanes. The zip ties dig nicely into the hardest packed surfaces, but they’re thin enough not to bounce the bike around at low speed or on short pavement sections. “

Samsung Galaxy Player coming in Q2 2011

Have you heard about Samsung’s next iPod Touch killer? The new 4-inch Galaxy Player that’ll run Android PMP? We certainly did few days ago. But there’s a bad news. For the Koreans, they’ll be getting it shortly after CES next week thanks to “home territorial advantage”, but those outside of the Starcraft nation, bad luck! You’ll only see it as early as “the April to June period”. That’s around 2nd quarter of 2011.

Like the iPod Touch, you get multitouch with Super AMOLED but short of the “Yellow!” function. The player will also be “an almost identical replica of the company’s wildly successful Galaxy S smartphone, which apparently has been no accident”. I’d expect the Galaxy Player to be slimmer though.

The WSJ also lets us in on the knowledge that Samsung’s phone division has taken over responsibility for building and selling its portable media player range, hence why we’re now seeing such major overlaps between the two categories.

Have any Asus? Is it your Pride?

Here’s a contest by Asus for all Asus owners. Apparently there’s lots of “Pride” in this poster, which means Asus want you to show off your rig with their name in a photo and a video, alongside a ‘fairytale and happy ending ever after’ story at their site. But what’s in return? Apparently, a chance to win the next Asus Intel chipset motherboard (probably P67) including the processor, and that’s not all. You’ll also get either a ‘Republic of Gamers’ 3D notebook, or the grand price of an all-expenses paid trip to Asus HQ in Taiwan!

MSI teases Killer NIC integration in Big Bang motherboards

Here’s yet another news about MSI’s upcoming Big bang motherboards. Apparently they’re going to use the infamous Killer NIC for ‘superb Ethernet speed’. Yes, the Killer NIC from Bigfoot Networks. It seemed that the company has teamed up with MSI to offer their enthusiast level NIC in MSI’s products which will be unveiled at the upcoming CES, presumably in their Big Bang motherboards.

Howse, CEO of Bigfoot Networks is quoted as saying that he’s “pleased to be working with MSI,” and up until now, there’s been no public partnership between the two firms. According to him, the Killer 2100 gaming network card “is a perfect complement to the MSI Big Bang family of mainboard solutions.”

Lian Li PC-A04 Mini Tower Case

Yes, another new case from Ah Lian, the pioneer in aluminium computer chassis. Lian Li is back with its latest mini-tower case, the PC-A04. This PC case allows you to mount up to seven 3.5-inch HDDs, Micro-ATX or Mini-ITX motherboards and can even accommodate high-end graphics cards that are infamous for being extremely long.

Measuring 188mm x 386mm x 460mm. the PC-A04 divides HDDs between two cages, one that holds three HDDs and one that holds four HDDs. All of these HDD mounts are tool-less and come with anti-vibration thumb screws. Additional features include a couple of 120mm intake fans on the front panel, a 120mm exhaust fan on the top panel, four vented PCI slots, two tool-less 5.25-inch CD-ROM drive mounts, a 2.5-inch internal hard drive mount and a mixture of USB 2.0, USB 3.0 and eSATA ports. PS3 private cryptography key hacked, mass Bluray disc coming!

Linux on every PS3 ever sold. Possible? Yes, and it’s coming probably next month, as a group of hackers called fail0verflow has just claimed to hacked the PS3 to reveal its own private cryptography key, the all important thing that allows people to sign their own code. But that’s not all; they also revealed that Sony didn’t bother generating any random numbers to secure the blasted thing, thus the cryptography always generate a same number all the time. The group intends to generate a proof-of-concept video tomorrow, and release the tools sometime next month, which will allow installation of Linux onto PS3.
